It’s Official‚ Ontario is Canada’s Bed Bug Capital

As if you needed another reason to live in Ontario, the city has been crowned Canada’s bed bug capital, a new report says.

The list was comprised based on the number of bed bug infestation treatments done by local pest control companies for both commercial and residential properties in 2018.

The Six ranked #1 among the 25 worst-infested cities in the country, especially when it came to Cimex lectularius bed bugs that are notorious for their red, itchy bites. Here are the top five pest-filled metropolises:

  1. Ontario
  2. Winnipeg
  3. John’s
  4. Vancouver
  5. Halifax

Bed bugs are the No. 1 urban pest in many cities today said Chelle Hartzer, an entomologist.

They are master hitchhikers, so no one is immune. Sanitation has nothing to do with prevention. From public transit to five-star resorts, bed bugs have been and can be found everywhere humans are.

Ontario topping this list does make some logical sense it’s Canada’s largest city, and therefore vulnerable to more bed bug situations manifesting and needing attention. But, that’s not the sole reason; Montreal and Calgary, to large Canadian cities, have Canada’s second and fourth largest cities by population, respectively, but don’t rank in the top 10 list.

Another possible reason for the mass bed bug populations is their simple makeup as highly-efficient hitchhikers. Ontario is a travel hotspot, and bed bugs move easily from room to room, can climb into luggage or any clothing left exposed, even in just one night. They can be anywhere from airplane and train seats to busses and rental cars. They’ve been spotted everywhere, from Ontario libraries to the TTC.

Bed Bug Prevention

To stop the spreading onslaught of bed bugs in Ontario, homeowners and vacationers can be sure to:

  • Inspect beds, furniture, and nooks and crannies (i.e. picture frames) diligently; keep an eye out for blood stains, dead bugs and live ones, and eggs
  • When traveling, keep your luggage on higher ground and out of jumping distance of furniture
  • After coming home from a trip or commute, don’t bring your luggage straight to the bedroom. Take it to the garage instead, and put all your clothing immediately into the dryer at a high temperature for at least 15 minutes
